What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to get you into a relaxed and receptive state of mind in order for you to make the changes that you want. In my type of hypnotherapy, I use many different techniques within my sessions including clinical hypnosis, psychotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
But I don’t turn you into a chicken! The people you may have seen on stage or on the TV have been hypnotised very deeply, only about 10% of the population can be hypnotised to that deep level and for hypnotherapy to work you don’t need to be that deep.
Those people have already gone through some suggestibility tests which has started hypnotising them already. The hypnotist has chosen the most suggestible people there.
Also there is some part of them that wants to behave in that way, because you are in control at all times – I cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a completely natural state. If you imagine a staircase where the top of the stairs is wide awake and the bottom of the stairs is fast asleep then hypnosis is the relaxed state about in the middle. I would describe the feeling as that place when you’ve just woken up and you could easily drift back to sleep again. Similar to zoning out – have you ever driven from A to B and got to your destination but have no memory of how you got there?!
You are also in this same state when you are relaxed and watching TV – this is why TV advertising is so powerful, you didn’t realise you really fancied a McDonalds until you saw the ad for the Big Mac!
To hypnotise you I use hypnotic and relaxing language, no swinging watches or strange music here!
How does it work?
I work directly with your subconscious mind, your mind is like an iceberg with 10% being controlled by your conscious mind and 90% by your subconscious. So once under hypnosis your conscious mind – “the chattering monkey” quietens down a bit and this allows your subconscious to open up.
Your subconscious believes everything you tell it. If you are watching a sad film or a scary film and you are really into it you start feeling those real emotions, even though you know its not real and you know they are actors. This is why you must be mindful of what you tell yourself.
The job of your subconscious is to protect you. This goes back to the caveman days when you needed to react seeing a sabre tooth tiger and you needed to remember to run away. So its always trying to help you, however sometimes it makes a mistake. It experiences something that happens, observes the behaviour and makes a marker on that event and then continues to repeat that behaviour. But it sometimes doesn’t realise that that behaviour many years later is not helpful or relevant anymore.
And this is where I come in. Using hypnotherapy I can communicate directly with the subconscious mind and let it know that this behaviour is not wanted anymore and then change it. Together we can create new neural pathways to create new behaviours.
We identify the root cause of the issue, if there was an event that happened that we need to deal with then we do that there and then, cutting any negative ties creating permanent change. So these issues are dealt with, released and let go of for good.
With some talking therapies this can take many sessions but with hypnotherapy (depending on the person and the issue) it only takes on average around 3-5 sessions and sometimes as little as 1 – such as smoking.
What issues does hypnotherapy work for?
Well if it involves your mind then its possible that hypnotherapy can deal with it!
There is an extensive list here but some of the issues I have been working with recently include anxiety and stress, fears/phobias of spiders, balloons, heights, flying. Smoking, weight loss, confidence, addiction, PTSD and trouble sleeping.
These issues can be very debilitating and hypnotherapy can change people’s lives. It can even be lifesaving – and that is not an exaggeration – I have had several clients who have come back from very dark places.
However it must be stated that results vary from person to person and there are no guarantees. What I can guarantee is a total commitment from me to get you the best outcome possible for you to be the best YOU that you can be.
